About Us
What is Nutrition Medicine?
Nutrition as the key to good health is the all-embracing fundamental principle used since the time of the famous Greek doctor and the founder of western medicine, Hippocrates. The age old adage, “we are what we eat” still holds firm in today’s hectic society where convenience is thought to be the answer to all our problems.
Poor nutrition can have an adverse impact upon our health causing deficiency diseases such as scurvy, health threatening conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis.
The diet of an individual refers simply to what he eats. As a nutritionist I have a special interest in human nutrition, meal planning, and the economics of shopping and food preparation. In conjunction with your Doctor, I am trained to provide safe, evidence-based dietary advice to individuals to help prevent ill health or to correct a nutritional deficiency or adverse health state.
What is Herbal Medicine?
Herbal medicine, also called botanical medicine, refers to the use of any plant’s seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark or flowers for medicinal purposes. Herbalists have been a part of medical history for centuries. The increased use of scientific research is proving the efficacy of plant based remedies in the treatment of many of the disease states that affect individuals in the 21st Century. Herbal medicines can come in the form of conventional tablets or capsules, liquids and teas for use in infusions. Common herbal medicines may include St Johns Wort, Echinacea, Ginseng, Licorice and Turmeric.
The World Health Organization has estimated that approximately 80% of people in the world rely upon herbal medicines for some part of their primary healthcare. More and more people in New Zealand are turning to Herbalist to provide a viable alternative for their healthcare. When used in isolation or in conjunction with treatments prescribed by your Doctor, herbal medicines can be highly effective.
Herbal medicines are considered to be natural and safe. When prescribed by a qualified practitioner this is the case. The side effects associated with Herbal medicines are much less severe than other preparations but they must still be considered to be medicines. I am trained and qualified to dispense these medicines in a safe and effective way to help you to achieve your health goals.
